How Many Supply Diffusers Do I Need Per Square Foot?

Short answer: one supply diffuser per 150–250 square feet for typical offices, one per 100–180 sq ft for high-load spaces like conference rooms, and one per 300–400 sq ft for low-load spaces like hallways and storage.

Engineer's note: These are rules-of-thumb for pre-bid budgeting and stocking decisions. The final count comes from an ACCA Manual N or ASHRAE 62.1 airflow calculation done by your mechanical engineer based on actual loads. Use this table to set wholesale stocking levels — not to replace the engineering.

Three factors that shift the count

Ceiling height

Above 10 feet, diffuser throw increases and you can space further apart. Below 8 feet, throw tightens and you need more diffusers to avoid cold spots. 9–10 feet is the "standard" height these rules of thumb assume.

Heat load per square foot

South-facing glass walls, IT equipment racks, kitchens and commercial bakeries need 30–60% more supply air per square foot. Shade, north-facing walls, and low-occupancy rooms can accept 20–30% less.

Diffuser throw pattern

4-way diffusers cover the most area per unit. 2-way diffusers are right next to walls. Linear slots change the math entirely — coverage is length-driven, not unit-count-driven. Round diffusers throw symmetrically and are often spaced slightly tighter than 4-way square units.

For wholesale stocking

If you stock to serve typical commercial projects in the 8,000–25,000 sq ft range, a 1 diffuser / 200 sq ft ratio means each project uses 40–125 diffusers. Stock in minimum-50-unit increments of your most common SKUs (24×24 4-way white, 24×24 4-way aluminum, 12" round step-cone) and you'll cover the vast majority of walk-in orders. Projects above 40,000 sq ft typically go to full project-spec quotes, not stock draws.
